2017 was a great year for the ketogenic diet. Here’s a list of the Top 10 Ketogenic Diet Books of the year! And a great giveaway of some of those books for one lucky winner.

Please note that this post contains affiliate links.

Best Keto Books of 2017

2017 was a fantastic year for the ketogenic diet. It has exploded in popularity, with more and more people coming to recognize the value of this healthy way of eating. For many, it’s no longer a fad or a quick way to lose a little weight but a true way of life, one that helps them manage a myriad of health issues. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s the best way to manage my diabetes. And I am truly glad to be on the vanguard of such a revolutionary sea change in our concept of health.

My only concern is that, as with other health trends, the message gets diluted as more and more people try to capitalize on its popularity. I’ve watched this happen with the gluten-free trend and the paleo trend, and I fear it’s already happening with keto. Companies are promoting products as “keto” when they really aren’t, simply because it’s a hot keyword. Or they are creating products that technically are keto, but are made with pretty junky ingredients. I suppose it’s inevitable, and it is up to the true keto warriors to separate the chaff from the proverbial grain.

The Best Ketogenic Diet Books of 2017

Because I am well-known in the keto and low carb diet worlds, I receive a lot of books to review. And 2017 saw the debut of many, MANY a keto book, including my own. Some are cookbooks, some are how-to books, some are educational. Some are really good and some are…not as good. So as the year draws to a close, I thought I give a nod and a review to some of the best of those books. That is “best” in my own personal, possibly not-perfectly-objective, opinion. I like big beautiful books with lots of great photos and information that is based in true science. What can I say, I am stickler for evidence!

I am also giving a nod to some of the most anticipated books coming out for 2018. Looks like it’s shaping up to be an even bigger year for the keto diet!

Best Keto Books of 2017

Everyday Keto Kitchen

The Everyday Ketogenic Kitchen: These are in no particular order but of course I have to give my own keto cookbook the first mention. I am pretty sure my publisher would have my head if I didn’t! False modesty aside, I really am proud of this book. It’s got a full colour photo for each recipe, along with full nutritional information. And a fantastic photo index at the back for the ease of finding just what you want to make. My recipes are reliable and creative, it’s what I am known for as a blogger, but I flatter myself that the information in the front matter is helpful to new and old keto-ers alike. I really feel like I achieved what I set out to do – to make the keto diet accessible to everyone. It’s called The Everyday Ketogenic Kitchen because it’s a cookbook you can use every day.

The Keto Diet by Leanne Vogel: A very thorough and well researched treatment of the keto diet. How to do it, how to get started, and how to maintain it. I think it’s almost more valuable for the information in the front than for the recipes. It also has meal plans for every level of keto dieter, from beginner to advanced.

Keto Comfort Foods by Maria Emmerich: Maria is basically the queen of keto cookbooks, with…goodness, I’ve lost count of how many she’s put out in the last few years. This is my favourite of her recent books because who can’t use some good comfort food recipes?

Keto Slow Cooker and One Pot Meals by Martina Slajerova: My friend Martina is the mastermind behind Ketodiet App. She’s also a great recipe writer and photographer. And everyone loves slow cooked meals! I just got a copy of this book and I am so excited to give it a go.

The Ketogenic Bible by Dr. Jacon Wilson and Ryan Lowery, PhD: This ain’t no cookbook, my friends. This is a serious book on the science behind the keto diet. It’s quite a tome and has a list of references after each section, which the science geek in my kind of loves. You aren’t going to sit down and read this cover to cover but it’s fantastic reference book for understanding all aspects of the keto lifestyle. I wish I’d had this book in my hands when I was writing my own, so I could have referred to it and made sure I was correct on some of the more scientific aspects. As it was, I referred frequently to another great book, Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman…but that one wasn’t written in 2017!

Low Sugar, So Simple by Elviira Krebber: It may not mention Keto in the title but make no mistake, most of Elviira’s recipes are perfect for the keto diet. I love her “So Simple” approach, both in her book and on her blog. Simple recipes with minimal ingredients make the keto more accessible to everyone.

Fight Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet by Ellen Davis, MS: This is a self-published book by a wonderful keto expert with a MS in applied clinical nutrition. People are beginning to understand that many cancers are fed by excess sugar and a keto diet can help slow, if not entirely stop, the progression. This is a great treatment of the subject and how to use ketosis as therapy.

The Keto Paleo Kitchen by Vivica Menegaz: I do not yet have a copy of this book but I am hoping to get one! I have always loved Vivica’s approach of marrying the two popular diets. I love dairy too much to go paleo but I see the appeal of it. And as I know Vivica’s work from her blog, I am confident this would be a great addition to your collection.

Simply Keto by Suzanne Ryan: A relative newcomer on the scene, Suzanne shot to keto stardom with her Keto Karma Instagram account. She’s been very frank about her own weight struggles and how keto has helped her find herself again. And she put together a beautiful book that embodies her openness and her accessibility. It’s a pleasure to flip through this book and drool over the simple and straightforward recipes.

Easy Ketogenic Diet Slow Cooking by Amy Ramos: I got a chance to review this book earlier and thought it was quite good. I made the Slow Cooker Lemon Custard, which was excellent. My biggest issue with the book is the lack of photos for all the recipes.

Most Anticipated Keto Books of 2018!

I can hardly wait for these books to come out! Two of them are my own, actually, so of course I can’t wait to see how they do. But I have my eye on a number of others that I think will be best sellers.

Craveable Keto by Kyndra Holley: My friend Kyndra has 3 or 4 books coming out this year (because she’s crazeeeee!) and I think all of them will be spectacular. But this one is her headliner and I can’t wait to get my hands on it and start craving.

Easy Dairy-Free Ketogenic Recipes by Maria Emmerich: You know the queen of keto is going to bring it…again! I actually already have a review copy of this one. Looking good.

Easy Keto Dinners by Carolyn Ketchum (hey, that’s me!): Getting healthy food on the table isn’t always easy…but I am going to show you how to make it a whole lot easier! It comes out in May but it’s available now for preorder.

Easy Keto Desserts by Carolyn Ketchum (oh hey, that’s me again!): You know I love dessert and I think it has a place in a healthy keto diet. And I bring my pretty rockin’ dessert skills to these recipes so you know it’s going to be good. It comes out in the summer but is also already available for pre-order. It doesn’t even have a cover yet but it’s only $13.35 on Amazon.

Keto Living Day by Day by Kristie Sullivan: Kristie actually got her start in keto cooking using many of my recipes. She then branched out on her own and has been seeing huge success. So this one ought to be good!

The Easy 5-Ingredient Ketogenic Diet Cookbook by Jen Fisch: I just got a review copy of this book and my kids gave the Garlic Paprika Chicken Legs a huge thumbs up!

Best Keto Books Giveaway!

Want to get this great collection of books? One lucky winner will get 1 copy of The Keto Diet, one copy of The Ketogenic Bible, 1 copy of Keto Comfort Foods and 1 copy of Simply Keto. Plus I will pre-order the winner one book of their choice on the 2018 list!

Your keto bookshelf will be bursting at the seams…

(note that the bundle does not include my own book at this time…I do lots of giveaways for signed copies so keep your eyes peeled for that!). And if you already own my cookbook, then you get extra entries for this giveaway.

Still, I follow al lot of the authors on their blogs and I love them all. My favorite blog is “All day I dream about food” because the recipes are so simple to do at home and the blogposts are so amusing and informative. I eliminated bird food–er, sorry, grains–from my diet over three years ago, and in my experience it’s easier than people think. I just don’t eat those things anymore. There are lots of recipes for great substitutes for just about anything grain-based: bread, crackers, cakes, cookies, pastries, rice, hot cereal, pizza dough, etc. Mozzarella dough is miraculous. But I tend to use rather infrequently, because grain-based eating just isn’t natural to me anymore. Once you move past the mindset that everything has to be served with bread or over rice or pasta, it’s really just strange to see those things alongside good, nutritious food. Sandwiches seem weird. Piles of rice seem weird. Toast, cereal, and oatmeal seem weird. It’s all weird. ? I like the way I eat and the things I eat.

I have to use lots of ground meat and chicken. (Can’t afford large family packs either as I don’t have freezer storage room). I am cooking for 1 so I would love some help with these restrictions. I started low-carbing it (via the glycemic index diet) in 2010 when I was struggling with infertility and diagnosed with PCOS. By restricting my carbs I lost weight, stabilized my hormones and now have 2 amazing little boys. But after I was done breastfeeding, low-glycemic just didn’t cut it anymore. So in August 2016, with much support from my sister-in-law and a close friend, I flipped the switch and have been keto WOE since!

I started on the ketogenic low carb way of life at the end of April 2017. In that time my husband has lost 10 kg and has gone from being on the cusp of being diabetic to none diabetic. I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for 24 years and at the end of November I was declared to no longer have diabetes. Huge celebrations here and a big, big thank you to all the bloggers who have helped me to do this, unknowing and unwittingly. I’ve been low carb since just before my type 2 diabetes diagnosis, which left me struggling to keep my A1c where the doctor liked it. Lost 50 pounds, but stopped, and longed to have better glucose control and get me clear eyesight and brain back. Discovered keto, did my research, and started the new lifestyle last summer. Suddenly, all my A1c’s are in normal range, my eyes feel clear and bright, my brain works again, I have energy for everyday life. Trouble is, I really hate taking time to cook, and now the market is filled with keto this and that. I really have needed help sorting out where to put my limited funds when it comes to recipes and keto info. It’s so good to get this list. I’m familiar with a couple of these already, and totally agree, so am encouraged to check out others on your list. Thanks so much. As time goes by, I’ve it’s harder and harder to stay on board with my crazy food choices in our food oriented society. Your words and great books are a shot in the arm for me . . .

I’m not a full-fledged keto person. Since this past summer I have been focusing on eliminating sugar, limiting carbs (particularly the refined variety), eating more clean, and consuming healthy proteins, fruits and veggies. The thing I miss the most is desserts and baked goods and am always on the look-out for better options than my old go-to’s. Additionally I have to keep veggie recipes varied so my kids and husband don’t get bored. All of this has led me to researching keto options.

I’ve been dabbling with keto for about 6 months off and on. I have not had the great weight loss, but I have definitely experienced other health benefits and that is extremely important to me. I didn’t make resolutions or goals per se, but I am putting my health at the top of the list of taking care of me’s this year and I feel if I really apply the keto principals, the weight will come off. I just need to get on board and stay on board and not be such a push over when life throws me curve balls.

I started cutting out sugar September of 2016 for inflammation, but by that December I was fully keto. I haven’t been adhering this holiday season (I’m maintaining weight and I’m also in Mexico City – I don’t feel like preparing my own food when there’s something new and interesting on every corner) I do plan on going straight back to keto when I’m back home and having some new recipes would definitely help!

Being a migraine sufferer, I had been doing all sorts of reading up how to decrease migraine pain. Acupuncture, piercings, botox injections, uhh no thanks! Came across a Reddit post about Keto and how many people have had, for the most part, cured their migraines! Changing the way you eat is definitely the cheapest way to find relief. It has been a year since I quit sugar and grains. In that year I have only had 1 migraine when I’d normally have at least 2 a month. Bonus I even lost a little weight! Keto has been one of the best decisions I had ever made and I plan on sticking with it!

I’ve been following a Keto way of eating since August. It started out as a 30 day experiment for myself and some skin issues I was having. I was first drawn to it because it didn’t require counting calories or weighing portions. My biggest set backs with following any change in diet in the past had been the amount of meals to be eaten in a day. I’m naturally NOT a morning eater but I love my coffee, now a bullet proof with added collagen! I find now that I’m eating higher fat and less carbs I eat once or twice a day and am totally satisfied. I do miss chips but have found a few awesome substitutes recently, like baked pepperoni and Parmesan crisps. I love your blog for the inspiration!

Keto is the way to go,
Keep the fats high and the carbs low.
Your confidence will “pop” as the scale starts to drop.
You will have energy to go, go, go so please remember that sugar is a no, no, no! I started Keto in September last year, lost 22 lbs so far and so can you my dear. This is a not a diet but a lifestyle instead, you can even make a Keto bread. These books will help me stay on track and spread some Keto love around. Just looking at them makes me want to loose another pound…

I have been struggling committing to Keto. I feel better when I eat a high fat diet, but I just don’t like meat, and everyone seems to take a heavy meat centered approach to Keto with meat at every meal. Neither my body nor my taste buds can take that much meat.I hope the books on your list can help me overcome my physical deterrence to eating meat or show me how to follow a Keto diet that isn’t meat-centric.

I have a few relatives that have been following the Ketogenic lifestyle (I hate the word DIET- four-letter word) and have had great success. So I checked it out and found your book very accessible. I love that you enjoy cooking and most importantly enjoy learning about cooking. I share the same passion esp. for Cooks Illustrated and America’s Test Kitchen magazines and books. And because you are so knowledgeable your recipes were easy to understand and follow. Thank you for such a great contribution to the cooking world. Love the Mozzaerella dough. This will be the next book I buy for my library. If I don’t win one 😉

I have type 2 diabetes along with high cholesterol and blood pressure and need to lose a lot of weight. I find it hard to do any of the diets out there because they either call for ingredients that I don’t normally & can’t afford to add to my grocery list and healthier food is a lot more expensive than the foods not so good for you. And some diets want you to give up entirely too much. But with all my looking I to the different diets out there, this one seems like it would be the best fit for someone like me. So winning these books would be the start of the new healthier me for 2018 ???

I have gotten on board with keto recently. I have to keep my blood sugar under control, and the newer keto recipes are even better than past low carb ones. Sometimes they are just tweaks, sometimes they are game changers! I would like to add one book I’m using right now: Dana Carpender’s 500 Ketogenic Recipes. I’d love to win this package to add to my collection.
