I don’t know about yours, but mine is a household of deli meat lovers. It’s all my husband’s fault, really. Back years ago when I met him, he was able to put away deli meat with alacrity. He still can, although not quite at the rate he used to do. But he’s always loved having a variety around for his lunches, and it’s a trait he’s passed on to our children. And to me. We usually have a full meat and cheese drawer in the fridge, and in a pinch we will grab a slice of meat, along with a bit of cheese, for a quick energy snack. We’re an active family that has a tendency to go through food at a rather alarming rate, and keeping quality protein around is high priority for me as a diabetic and a runner. Just wait until my kids are teenagers, then I am really in trouble. And if they follow in my footsteps and become serious runners? Oooh boy.

Our local grocery store carries the Dietz & Watson brand.  We are discerning deli meat lovers and we find the taste wonderful as well. 99.5 % of their products are gluten free certified by the Celiac Sprue Association, and the vast majority are zero or low carb as well. It fits in well with my low carb, gluten-free lifestyle. Good deli meat also helps me cut down on meal prep, especially when entertaining. We purchased one of the large Dietz & Watson deli platters for a pre-holiday get together, and along with some fresh veggies and a selection of gluten-free breads and crackers, we had a beautiful spread to offer our guests. It certainly makes it easier to let everyone make their own sandwiches to their liking, and there are no pots and pans to clean up at the end. There were also plenty of leftovers, which always makes me happy.

My kids, who can be picky at times, all love sliced meats and cheeses. I’m well known for weekend lunches that consist of a few slices of meat and cheese, and several kinds of veggies and fruit. It’s one of the few meals I can guarantee all my kids will eat. My husband is famous, at least in his own mind, for a sandwich he calls the Super Douper, piled high with several different kinds of deli meat and cheese, several different condiments, and add-ins like pepperoncini and sliced tomatoes. The day after the party, I made my own Super Douper on some of my homemade gluten-free, low carb bread. So good! Now that we are past the holidays and into January, many people are refocusing on their health and their diets. I think Dietz & Watson deli meats can be a wonderful part of a healthful diet. They certainly are in my family.
