Win a $100 worth of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Grass Roots!

Keto Dry Rub Ribs

The more I delve into the world of healthy food, the more concerned I am with knowing where my food comes from and how it was raised. Our modern food supply is all sorts of mucked up, with too many special interests involved, trying to maximize production at the expense of people’s health. That’s my opinion, anyway. I try not to proselytize because we all have different income levels and abilities and eating eggs and bacon is always going to be healthier than eating potato chips and fries. But I do want to make people aware of the importance of purchasing healthy and humanely raised meats whenever possible.

Grass Roots Meat Box

So I am delighted to introduce you to Grass Roots Co-op and to be able to host a giveaway for a box of their wonderful pasture-raised meats.

Okay so there are plenty of these subscription based meat boxes out there now. What makes Grass Roots different?

  • It’s a cooperative, so they are farmer-owned and operated. Based in rural Arkansas, the farmers have an ownership stake in the business and are paid a fair living wage.
  • The animals are 100% pasture-raised. The animals live outdoors their entire lives…the beef is grass-fed, the poultry is pasture raised and the pork is forested. The environments that the animals like best!
  • What’s so special about pasture raised? Grass Roots says it tastes better and as a discerning carnivore, I agree…“Our animals get a varied diet and lots of exercise, making their meat much more flavorful.  Our chickens scratch and hunt insects, our pigs root for grubs and acorns in Ozark forest (thus we call it “forested pork”), our cows munch on a variety of fresh grasses and never eat grain. We rotate our animals daily to enhance the land, restoring valuable nutrients to the soil.“
  • Their meat is healthier because their animals are never given hormones, unnecessary antibiotics, or other additives.

Want to read more on Grass Root’s commitment to sustainable pasture-raised meat? READ MORE HERE

When Grass Roots reached out to me to help bring their service to your attention, I was immediately on-board. There are so many things about this that speak to me. The mission to bring together and raise the standing of organic farmers in rural Arkansas. The mission to raise the animals in the best environments and as humanely possible. I live in a place where I am fortunate to have access humanely and sustainably raised meat. I buy beef from my friend’s parents, who run an organic CSA in central Oregon and I purchase my pork from her husband’s family’s farm.

But Grass Roots has such a mission that dovetails so perfectly with my own values, I will absolutely consider purchasing from them again. I love that the meat came in a box padded with biodegradable foam. We actually just pop those cornstarch-based foam pieces right into our compost so I don’t have to feel guilty about adding styrofoam to landfills!

Now let’s get to the goods. I know you want to know what I made with my box of goodies. Well to be honest, I haven’t gotten into it all quite yet but we did use the spare ribs to make my Dry Rub Rib recipe from The Everyday Ketogenic Kitchen! Because that’s one of our favourite meals, any time.

Grass Roots Farmer’s Cooperative Giveaway

One winner will receive a $100 store credit to use at their convenience on any subscription items of their choosing. Open to US residents only, 18 year of age or older.

I love the fact that these farmers are treating the animals humanely and letting them do what makes them happy (chickens running around scratching in the dirt, cows and pigs wandering around eating grass, etc). I wish more farms were able to do this! =)

So good to hear that they feed their animals a truly natural diet their entire lives. Lots of labels say “grass fed” but few say ‘Grass fed and Grass finished” or that the animals get to forage, allowing them to eat a very balanced diet. I am in love with the sous vide method of cooking and the fabulous texture and moisture it provides all cuts of meat, so I would probably try a steak first! I am concerned with the antibiotics given feed lot animals and with the insecticides/pesticides used on the grain fed to them. I would love to find a reputable high-quality grass-fed product and help support the farmers and ranchers that provide it!
