I am interrupting your regularly scheduled programming of delicious low carb recipes in order to introduce you to Marjorie. Marjorie is a dog with a very important story, one that helped change the course of medical treatment for Type 1 diabetes. See Marjorie, the pretty black and white dog you see featured here, was the first creature ever to be kept alive on “pancreatic extract”, which led to the discovery of insulin in the 1920’s. A pretty impressive pedigree for a little dog, wouldn’t you say?
My favourite diabetes publication, A Sweet Life Magazine, has chosen to honour Marjorie as part of their fundraising campaign. The Diabetes Media Foundation, which puts out the digital diabetes magazine, is a not-for-profit organization. And like all non-profits, it must find ways to raise some of its own funds in addition to those from generous sponsors and donors. These unique t-shirts feature a sketch of Marjorie by Jen Jacobs, with the blue circle of diabetes awareness as her collar and a vial of insulin as her dog tag. They are for sale from now until October 17th.
I sincerely hope you will consider supporting A Sweet Life, a wonderful digital magazine that holds no punches when it comes to the difficult subject of diabetes. The founders and editors of A Sweet Life are both living with Type 1 diabetes and know firsthand what it’s like. They want to bring real news and healthy ideas to the diabetes community and I love what they to. Plus they showcase my recipes each week, so I guess it’s a mutual admiration society. They support the low carb mission for diabetes whole-heartedly.
