I love coffee cake and I am not afraid to admit it. I mean, think about it. Coffee cake basically gives you permission to start your day with a slice of CAKE. How can that be bad?

And if it’s keto coffee cake, then all the better!

Does coffee cake contain coffee?

I think most of us who grew up in North America understand the term coffee cake to be a cake that is served with coffee. It’s often served as part of a nice brunch or as an afternoon snack.

But I have an international readership and I have had a few readers over the years who question whether there is an ingredient missing in my keto coffee cake. It’s an understandable mistake, of course. One of those cultural misunderstandings that happen when an expression is translated literally.

So let’s clear it up here and now. I am sure there are coffee cakes out there that actually contain coffee, but most do not. They are meant to be eaten with coffee, and there are any number of delicious variations.

If you’re talking about the top photo in the post, it’s the pumpkin crumb cake.

I love coffee/crumb cakes! (fyi: the New York Crumb Cake recipe is one of the reasons I bought your latest cookbook!) I made a recipe from one of the bloggers you listed and was very pleasantly surprised with the texture and how it compared to traditional cake. Apparently the “secret ingredient” is oat fiber. I am curious why you don’t use this in any of your cake/muffin recipes? As you only touch on oat fiber slightly in your cookbook, I’d be interested to know if there is a reason you’re not comfortable with this ingredient before I continue baking with it. And thanks for this great recipe roundup!

I am not comfortable with it because 1. it tastes like cardboard and 2. I don’t know how truly low carb it is. Yes, so it’s mostly fibre but many of us count total carbs and fiber can be misleading as some of it may be absorbed by the blood stream. In small quantities, I think it’s okay but not really a fan compared to other flours.

Thanks for the quick response. I will certainly keep that in mind if I come across another recipe with this ingredient.
