Want a better way to test your ketones? Check out the new Keto Mojo! And I am giving away a monitor and 60 test strips. This post contains affiliate links.

Ketone blood monitor review

Well friends, I am back home and in my kitchen after a whirlwind book tour for The Everyday Ketogenic Kitchen. And while I’ve been cooking up a storm, I am a wee bit behind on recipe development for the blog. In fact, I’ve actually been working on recipes for cookbook number TWO! But shhhhhh, that little project is still under wraps for right now.

So in lieu of a recipe today, I thought I’d tell you about a new keto product that I purchased lately and that I am really happy with. It’s kind of upped the keto game for me and I like it so much, I thought I’d not only review it for you, but give one away as well.

I recently got my paws on the new Keto Mojo Ketone and Blood Glucose Monitor. And I am loving it!

For the most part, I am quite lazy. And by that I don’t mean that I don’t work hard or exercise hard…because I work insanely hard and I love nothing more than breaking a good sweat. But I do fall into the Lazy Keto category. By which I mean I don’t obsessively track what I eat and I don’t spend inordinate amounts of time calculating my macros. I simply intuitively eat a very low carb, very high fat diet and pretty much hope for the best.

Or at least I used to simply hope for the best. But over the past year or so, I got more interested in knowing how I was actually doing on the keto scale. To that end, I bought some of the urine strips, even though I knew that they were notoriously inaccurate. For a while, they seemed to be pretty reliable, as long as I managed to use them first thing in the morning (and not go to the bathroom in the middle of the night!). I was usually in mild to moderate ketosis, which seemed about right based on what I was eating.

And then they just stopped working altogether. I don’t know if the batch got old, if it was open too long, or what, but suddenly, no matter what I did, my ketones didn’t register at all. I got zero, zip, zilch every time I tested, no matter how on track or off track I ate. Even when I was eating minuscule amounts of carbs…the test strip stayed that disheartening pale shade of tan. I have since discovered that sometimes, when we are well into our keto lives, our body is using this fuel more efficiently and so it stops showing up in our urine. Interesting.

Anyway, through the powers that be (aka Jimmy Moore), I heard of a new product coming out, a new blood ketone/glucose monitor with test strips that weren’t going to cost an arm and a leg. Typically, ketone blood test strips can cost $3 to $4 dollars PER STRIP! And the ones for the Keto Mojo monitor are priced at $1 per strip.

Now….that’s still pretty expensive if you plan to test your ketone levels several times a day. But blood testing for ketones is really the only way to truly know where you stand. I started testing right away when mine arrived and was delighted to discover that despite the negative I was getting on the urine strips, I was a nice solid 2 mmol/L. Moderate ketosis, exactly where I wanted to be.

Ketone blood monitor review

I actually took mine with me on my book signing tour, because a crazy travel schedule can wreak havoc on one’s diet. I didn’t use it every day, but I checked my ketones every few days, just so I could monitor how I was doing. Since I am used to checking my blood glucose anyway, it was easy to get used to the Keto Mojo monitor. And when I had questions, I just hopped over to the Keto Mojo Facebook page and asked them there. I got almost immediate responses!

Do I think you need a ketone blood monitor? Not necessarily, but it sure is nice to have one. I think they are great for people starting this diet who really need a baseline of how they are doing. And I think it’s really great as a way to check in once in a while and keep tabs on yourself. And if you fall off the wagon and kick yourself out of ketosis, the Keto Mojo is a great way to help you get back on track. In the end, I don’t think anyone needs to test more than once a day, just to see how they are doing. And once you are comfortable with this lifestyle and know what you are doing, you could test as little as once every few days. At that rate…it’s quite reasonable.

To get the Keto Mojo test strips for only $1 per strip, just join the Keto Clarity Club here!

And now, yes, I am giving away a whole Keto Mojo set, sponsored by no one except little old me. Because I really do like this product and will stand behind it with pride! So I am giving away the basic kit that includes the monitor, lancet device and lancets, and 10 ketone strips (valued at $49.95). Then I am going to throw in another vial of 50 ketone strips ($50). Because I want YOU to be successful on your keto journey and I think this product can’t but help!

Oh and if you want to see me actually USE the Keto Mojo monitor, I will be doing a Facebook Live video today sometime around 1pm Pacific. I will post the link here for all to see!

This post could not be more timely. We found out just yesterday that my husband is prediabetic. We are in shock. I have been eating low-carb for 12 years and much of what I have learned and done over the past 12 years has rubbed off on him–and of course, he eats what I eat. But, the interesting part is, that God has fully prepared us for this trial: I have been researching keto over the past few months, just out of curiosity. I asked for your new cookbook for my birthday a few weeks ago… But I had NO idea that we would truly need it, and so quickly! Carolyn, I am so thankful for your work.

    Hi,

I lived in the Philippines, but been doing Keto lifestyle for quite awhile now. We don’t have access to ketones tool measurement, I only see most of this in the US, buying from here costs too much too. This would be a great tool, specially if you’re allowing cheat days, and you need to kick back to keto.

I have been following the Keto diet (off and on) for the past year. Recently I made a commitment to follow it as a lifestyle, I bought your cookbook and simply love it! It’s so easy to follow and you take all the work out of cooking by using everyday ingredients that I can find in the store. I have NOT tested for Keto numbers, so this would be great in helping me to find my ‘sweet spot’ in the Keto lifestyle. Thanks for all you do Carolyn!

I’ve never tried Ketone testing before, but would definitely like to try. Currently I’m testing my blood sugar levels both AM before eating and PM an hour after dinner. Even tho’ I’m not considered diabetic, or even pre-diabetic, I have too much circulating blood sugar. Also, I very rarely feel that I’m in ketosis. Don’t know if it’s a metabolism thing, age, pancreas issues or what. My naturopath and I are trying to get to the bottom of it. This might give us a little more insight into what’s going on.

I have tested my ketones before, but the monitor I have is really costly for the strips, and I haven’t used it in a while because it seemed really inconsistent, making me question its accuracy. Mainly I go off of how I feel. I have been keto for a little over a year, lost 67lbs, and pretty much got rid of all my PCOS symptoms except I’m still trying to overcome infertility! My hubby and I have been trying for 4 years. Your blog, recipes, and now your cookbooks have been vital to my success! My husband and I just finished mortar washing our house and although I kept up with keto meals (a lot of instant pot help) the first week, we then resorted to cheap (unhealthy) take out for the first time since we started keto in 2003. Boy, it was NOT pretty! My husband gained 15# and I won’t get near the scale! We are back on track and feeling so much better. ( We did save a lot doing the work ourselves… our conciliation!)

I have just started Keto way of eating. I bought your book and I think this would be a great tool to let me know if I am on the right track and keep me on track. I would have no problem purchasing one but I foster 3 children and I don’t have the money at this time. I know that people will say you get paid to foster but I am a family placement and the paperwork got massively messed up and I have been 8 1/2 months waiting for them to straighten it out with no outcome in the foreseeable future – lot to fit into a nutshell but that is why I can’t purchase it at this time. I have tried to use the urine strips but they don’t work all that well for me and I don’t know if it is my body or the strips not working.
I hope you feel better soon… lots of people are getting colds right now and you were around a lot on the book signing tour….. I am enjoying your book very much.. the photography in it is very nice as well. And on the (shhhh) I hope I will be able to get the next one when it happens (but that should be long enough in the future so I can save some…. yes)

I have only used the urine test strips but even on very low carb days (10-15 net carbs) I only ever tested in the low to low moderate range. It would be interesting to see the difference in testing with this monitor. It’s great to see there is finally a monitor that uses somewhat affordable test strips.

I’ve been eating low carb for 2 years and lost some weight then I moved to Keto and lost some more and was happier eating that way over all. Lately, I’m guessing the stress of traveling and our daughters wedding and being seriously sick stalled me and can’t figure out how to get back to losing again. Going back to what I had been doing isn’t cutting it now and I’m not sure why. I need to look into a ketone monitor. Thanks for your blog and recipes I use them often.

I was diagnosed as a diabetic a year ago. I keep my blood sugars low by staying low carb and moderately high fat, it seems to be working as my last A1C was 6.2 and my doctor was thrilled….even more so since I did it all without any medications! 😀

I found it somewhat helpful though I finally stopped measuring my ketones since I got kind of fixated on my measurements. I decided to take a break for a while and just concentrate on enjoying my food and adapting to my new lifestyle. However, I’ve always heard that blood ketone measurements are the most accurate so I would use this probably a few times a week just to keep track of my process.

I have tested using keto strips, but after a few months on low carb diet, and you have lost 30-50 lbs, your ketone profile changes to the point that the pee strips don’t work any more. I basically tracked when I was losing weight and kept a “symptoms of ketosis” diary, and now I kinda just “know” when I’m in the right place. It doesn’t take much to knock me out of ketosis at this point.

I used to test my fasted ketones/glucose every morning and I found it to be a very useful tool in the beginning of my ketogenic journey when I wrote down everything and figured out how I felt correlates with what the numbers said. After awhile, though, it became very expensive and I was only able to afford to test glucose. Around my 6 months of following my ketogenic lifestyle, I purchased a Ketonix (a breath analyzer) and have been using it ever since. I love my Ketonix because I have compared those results to how I feel and it has saved me a lot of money. I listen to a lot of Ketogenic podcasts and read a lot of blogs and always find that they want to know your blood ketone readings. I would love to be able to test my blood again – and winning the Keto Mojo would give me that knowledge.

I have wanted a blood test monitor for a few years, but with test strips costing $4-$6 (and NOT covered by insurance) it was way too pricey for me.

I have only tested with urine strips, but I’d love to have an accurate measure of my ketones. This sounds perfect!

I’ve never tested using an actual monitor, always the urine strips. I have the same problem you do, they stop working after the bottle has been open for awhile…turning them into a waste of money! This little device would be really handy!

I just found your Facebook and blog yesterday. I have the urine strips but only used it once, not even sure I was doing it right. I don’t track my macros or anything so this would be a great way to see if I’m eating the way I need to be

I’ve only ever tested through the strips and frankly, I don’t think they are always a good indication. I’d like something a bit more precise!

I’ve never used strips to test, but I am paranoid about going out of ketosis now that I’m back on a Keto diet after not eating Keto for about 2 months. Hate that ketonflu feeling and trying so hard to not break Keto! ???

Hi, I see where the entries are closed now. When will the drawing be? Or has it been already? If so, I missed it 🙁

I hope that you are feeling much better now than when you did the review of the tester. I have been wondering if you were fairing better with some time to be home and hopefully resting some.

Cold weather has set in and I am anxious to look through my books and find some nice warming foods to help deal with the upcoming cold months. I hope the kids will like the new menu (seasonal change in foods).

Great review as always. I would agree with you that it is not necessary to use a keto meter but it just helps SO much with knowing where you stand. It has given me actual facts about when I am in ketosis, and that helps me to stay on track. I had doubts between the Keto Mojo or the Precision Xtra and crossed this comparing article before I purchased the mojo http://foodadviceonline.com/keto-mojo-compared-to-precision-xtra/

    Hi 🙂

Great review! Have you tried the KetoPlot app? It’s an app for logging your Ketone and Glucose readings from your blood meter. I just got it and I have found it really helps motivate me to see all my numbers with the trend. Rather than just focusing on the current number
