A healthy avocado smoothie recipe with matcha green tea for an added nutritional boost. This delicious low carb smoothie is packed with protein and anti-oxidants. The perfect post workout snack! Check out my video to see just how easy it is to make.
This avocado smoothie recipe has been on my blog since 2013. It’s truly delicious and so easy to make, so I decided to give it a little update. It’s now even healthier and lower carb than ever, with less than 5g total carbs per serving.
Have you ever had an avocado smoothie? I know the thought of it is going to freak some of you out but bear with me here. It really is delicious and avocados are perfect for low carb smoothies. I am pretty sure convince you of this fact, if you give me just a minute or two.
Why you should add avocado to your low carb smoothie
- They thicken smoothies even better than bananas. Obviously bananas are a no-no on the keto diet but avocados have half the carbs and they make for incredibly thick, creamy smoothies.
- Avocados have almost 4 times the fiber of a banana. Hey, maybe that’s why they thicken smoothies so well!
- They also have WAY more potassium than a banana. Dude, those bananas are not looking so good compared to avocados.
- Healthy fats. Yep, 21g of delicious healthy avocado fat so it’s perfect for the keto diet.
- They taste great. No really, they do. And if you’re not an avocado fan, you can easily hide the flavor with some cocoa powder, nut butter, a few frozen berries, or the extract of your choice.

Avocado Smoothie is the perfect workout snack
Food and fitness. My two loves; one old, one new. Food has always been a great love of mine. We go way back. Way, way back, to my infancy. Actually, that’s not strictly true, since I was one of the pickiest eaters in existence until I hit about 9 years old. Still, given that I just entered my 40s, that’s a good 31 years, a fairly long time frame for any love affair.
Fitness, on the other hand, is a recently acquired passion. I’ve always loved being active and outdoors but it wasn’t until I started running that I appreciated fitness for fitness’ sake. Feeling my legs grow stronger, my heart and lungs increasing in capacity, my mind clearing with the intensity of the exercise.
That’s incredibly powerful stuff, likely to turn any girl’s head so that she falls hard and fast in love. We’re about ten years into our relationship, fitness and I, and I don’t see us ever breaking up. And now that I’ve added CrossFit to the mix, I love seeing my strength increase and my muscles really become defined.
And thankfully, these two loves go well together. They get along and they even help each other out. With more fitness, I can enjoy more food. With better, healthier food, I can enjoy more fitness. What a team.
And this avocado smoothie is packed with healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. It really is the ideal snack to fuel you through or to recover from a tough workout.
Updated Avocado Smoothie Recipe
The original recipe was a little higher carb than this one. I decided to switch things up when I added this recipe to my cookbook Easy Keto Breakfasts.
I ditched the Greek yogurt in favor of heavy cream, and added collagen peptides instead of whey protein. But I kept the flavor profile exactly the same. The carbs dropped from 9g to only 4.5g!
So good and so easy. I know many people may be a bit freaked out by a green smoothie such as this. But trust me, it works. Matcha green tea is well known for its health properties and it’s got a lovely unique flavor. You really won’t taste the avocado at all.
Feel free to add any other nutritional boosters you might like, such as MCT Oil.
Want a dairy-free version? Simply sub coconut cream for the heavy whipping cream!

This looks so great. I love to brainstorm about recipes while I run too. In fact that is one of the things I missed most about running while I was taking a break from it. It is great to be back. And I will add this recipe to my list of post-workout eats.

Congratulation Carolyn! I think it’s great Cabot sponsors such a team but am so proud of you (does that sound totally weird?!). Fitness is a way of life where I live, and your passion for it as well as your recipe would be right at home! Happy Memorial Day!

Carolyn, do you have the protein value on this wonderful looking shake??

Hi Dita, it’s about 15 g per serving.

Hi there. I was just wondering where you buy our matcha gren tea powder. Our Whole Foods carries it, but I’m not sure if it’s what I’m looking for. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :0)
Carolyn says
Yes, the stuff at whole foods is the right stuff! I’ve seen it there too. Just don’t get the pre-sweetened kind, make sure you get the plain matcha powder.
Lady Jennie says
I have matcha powder that I don’t know what to do with (after a matcha cookie fiasco). And now I know what it was sitting around for.
Stacy | Wicked Good Kitchen says
What a great way to recover after a run or workout? Excellent recipe, Carolyn. Love smoothies with an almond milk base…and, avos in or on nearly anything! I’m with you…I get my best brainstorming from long showers or baths, too! The mind is freed to think creatively. xo

Love the Matcha Green Tea and Avocado smoothie recipe. I love matcha tea and have not tried it in a smoothie yet. Thanks for the idea! (Great photos too!)

I love creative shake/smoothies that are also compliant with the Paleo/Primal diet. I’ve never seen matcha green tea used before but what a great idea. And with lots of healthy fat this one is sure to fill the belly for hours!

Oh man I LOVE avocado in smoothies! Makes is to smooth and creamy!!
Aakanksha says
Hi! We don’t get Avocados frequently (well, it’s almost never) here. So what can I use as substitution in this recipe?
Margie says
I’ve loves several of your recipes, but this didn’t work well for me flavorwise. It is a great recovery drink, nonetheless. I want to try this again, but will not put in the sweetener. I’m wondering about a bit of ginger and maybe a green tea base instead of almond milk. I usually keep a pitcher of green tea in the fridge so I guess I’ll start with that. I really like the green tea powder addition, though.
Carolyn says
Those sound like great changes.
Pam says
How many calories are in each serving?
Carolyn says
No idea! I don’t really count calories but you can add it into a program like my fitness pal and find out.
Tom says
This is awesome. I have two little boys who LOVE the Hulk, and this would be a great treat for a summer day, thanks for sharing!
Paulette DeFoe says
Can you substitute cold green tea in place of the powder?
denise shack says
I AM WONDERING ABOUT THE SWERVE AS THE LABEL SAYS IT HAS 5G of carbs per serving. Why wouldn’t you use stevia instead?
Carolyn says
Yes, those are technically “carbs” but for most people they don’t affect blood sugar. I test my glucose and as far as my glucometer is concerned, those carbs don’t exist. They are excreted fully into the urine without ever entering the blood stream, according to research. So it is my go-to low carb sweetener. That said, you could use stevia if you wish.
Ashlyn says
Looks delish!! Cannot wait to try!
Lytter says
Avocado & green tea – great combination, the best!
Elliot Baron says
Would adding additional greens i.e. spinach and kale makes this more of meal replacement?
Carolyn says
Sure, that would be great.
Elliot Baron says
Hi Carolyn,
I stand corrected. Your Low Card Avocado Green Smoothie Recipe is great the way you have written it without the spinach that I added. I just have one question. When I make my green smoothies currently I drink them on the go. If I wanted this smoothie that you have written to have little more bulk or thickness have you tried adding anything else i.e. Ice, Chia Seed etc. Do you have any recommendations without compromising the net carb count too much? Thank you
Carolyn says
A little cream cheese (1 ounce) might help thicken it but that will add 2g of carbs. If you just want it thicker without any carbs, try 1/8 tsp xanthan gum.
Elliot Baron says
thank you very much. I realized this morning when I made the smoothie that I find measure the ingredients a little more carefully it came out perfect. So I’m going to drink it as is. Thank you again as this is helped Kickstart my weight loss again.
Anthony Jones says
Hi Carolyn, when you say 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt do you mean as in on the measuring cup or half of the cup/container that it comes in from the store? Sorry I’m slow lol
Carolyn says
I mean 1/2 cup measured out in a measuring cup.
Elliot Baron says
A year and half later I figured out that adding ice to this recipe as is really makes into a healthy tick treat. LOL. I am slower learner. Thank you!!!
Elliot Baron says
Thnak you
chontel says
Could you omit the Almond milk and just add more water?
Carolyn says
Sure.
Adriana Richmond says
I had to try this as it seems so unusual…avocados and matcha tea!! It tastes really lovely and I found my smoothie for the weekend ! I have a facebook group for women on keto low carb ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/1125957090915929/) and I have bookmarked the page to share with them. It is too yummy not to!

Morning, Carolyn!
Thanks for the great looking recipe! I read all the comments trying to get the answer, but could not. The recipe lists avocado twice, but no sweetener. Comments mention sweetener. Please advise! 😊 Thanks for all you do!
Carolyn says
Oops, sorry! I just updated the recipe but obviously mistyped something. Off to fix it now!
Cheryl says
Awaiting the fix. I was wondering the same thing. I like avocados in certain things, can’t say I have had it in a smoothie but will have to give it a try once the recipe gets fixed. Thanks a bunch.
Carolyn says
It’s fixed.
Lisa B. Lilly says
There aren’t really supposed to be two half avocados in the ingredients, are there?
Carolyn says
It should be fixed now.
Karri Stoerp says
does it use a whole avocado? 1/2 avocado is listed twice.
Claudia Breland says
I was puzzled about the amount of protein in this smoothie, but then I read the comments and you mention greek yogurt. That’s not in the list of ingredients…..
Carolyn says
If you read the blog post, you will see it’s an updated recipe. No more Greek yogurt.
Julia F says
My kids are the biggest avocado fans and they loved this smoothie! Thank you for sharing.

Hey everyone, if you haven’t tried it DO SO NOW. Incredibly delicate taste and stays with me from 10-2. I made it twice. First, just a described but used soy milk and didn’t use the sweetner or vanilla because my Costco protein powder has some of each. Second time, I made it for our newly announced vegan grandson. I used the coconut milk, 1/2 t stevia, and 1/2 t vanilla. Both versions were equally incredible. Thank you!
Carolyn says
Glad you like it!
Alexa says
Yum-I bet this would be great Golden Milk style by subbing turmeric for the matcha and coconut milk/cream in place of the heavy whipping cream. 🙂
Tracy says
Sooooo good!!! Thank you for a refreshing and light smoothie choice for my commute to work!
Carolyn says
It’s an unusual combo, but it really works!
Jessica says
I have been making this every morning for the last couple of days. I am obsessed! This actually reminds me of bubble tea, but healthier 🙂 I look forward to my mornings just for this!
Kiesha C. says
New to keto, and I have a quick question! Could you substitute allulose powder for the swerve sweetner? Thanks!
Carolyn says
In this recipe, yes. In many recipes where you want a crispiness… no. It doesn’t crisp up.
