Crio Bru Brewed Cacao is a wonderful alternative to coffee. And I am giving you the chance to win some for yourself!
Early Happy Mother’s Day, my friends.
I make no secret of my love for coffee, and I have no plans to give it up any time soon. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy other hot beverages too!
I recently decided to give Crio Bru® a try, for something a little different. The ads for it kept popping up on my Facebook feed (thanks, Facebook!) and I was intrigued. So I ordered a starter pack and got brewing.
And while nothing will ever replace coffee in my heart, it really is delicious stuff!
What is Crio Bru®?
Crio Bru is a unique hot beverage made from ground cacao beans. Yep, the same beans from which we get chocolate (my other great love!). If you’ve ever had a cacao nib, then you have eaten cacao beans.
Crio Bru roasts the cacao beans first, to bring out a deep chocolate flavor. And cacao beans are harder than coffee beans, so they don’t grind as finely. But you brew them in a similar fashion, adding hot water to extract the flavors into a thin liquid.
You can make Crio Bru in your own coffee maker, although you do need a gold filter rather than paper. I used the French press method.
What does it taste like?
While the resulting drink looks like weak coffee or tea, it tastes like dark chocolate. It’s unsweetened, of course, and I enjoy it just as is. I am one of those crazies who loves strong, dark chocolate and black coffee.
But of course you can add sweeteners and cream, or anything you normally add to your coffee. The infused drink isn’t nearly as dark as coffee, so it looks a little less impressive, but the flavor is distinctively chocolate.
And like coffee, Crio Bru offers varietals from different countries, along with some flavored versions and seasonal varieties. They had a mint chocolate version for the holidays and I wish now I had purchased some!

I tried to leave a comment but couldn’t. But…. I too love a good coffee but don’t want too much caffeine. It would be fun to try it AND a new way to brew. I currently use cold brew pot and heat in the microwave in the morning. I appreciate your posts, love the receipes without the barrage of ads to buy stuff!!

How do you clean out your french press? I always end up with coffee grounds all over the place or a bunch going down the drain. I do love this stuff, they also have a caramel chocolate one!
Carolyn says
I use a spoon to scoop most of the grounds into my compost first.
