Spartan Race

I feel very lucky that I discovered running at the ripe old age of 37.  It’s not like I hadn’t tried running before, but I never really enjoyed it much.  And then, suddenly, I did.  It’s hard to account for the change of heart, except that I did begin running with a group and I discovered that I was pretty good at it.  And I discovered that “runner’s high”, that feeling you get when you push past mile 3 or 4 (or whatever your threshold is), really does exist and you suddenly feel like you could go forever.  Here I am, a little over 2 years later, and I will be racing my 5th half-marathon this coming weekend in New York City.


But as someone who needs variation and new challenges to keep her interest, I confess that road running can get pretty boring at times.  I am constantly changing up my routes so that I have new things to look at while I am pounding the pavement.  So I was very intrigued when I was offered this opportunity to promote Spartan Race.  This is definitely a way I could change up my routine and provide myself with new challenges.

What is Spartan Race?  Well, head on over and check them out!  They are these wild and crazy obstacle and trail races.  You may not consider yourself a runner…I didn’t for a long time.  But there’s almost no way these couldn’t be fun.  Who cares how long it takes to finish, it hardly matters.  It’s not about winning, it’s about getting out there, challenging yourself and having a good time doing it.  Beginners are just as welcome as people who’ve been running for years, and the Spartan Race website provides plenty of motivation, with daily workouts, newsletters and blogs.  They have training plans for every level.

I need something new to keep me going, and I think Spartan Race might be just the thing.  Sure, it looks intimidating, but remember that you are doing this for YOU.  It’s about getting off your couch and moving, and enjoying the process.
