Want a truly different glaze for your holiday ham? Try glazing it with the spicy sweet flavors of homemade sugar-free chili garlic sauce. This post is sponsored by Jones Dairy Farm.
One thing you should know about me is that I really, really don’t like sweet ham glazes. This is a very important thing to know about a person, wouldn’t you say? Just think of the shame of serving your guests ham for Easter dinner and then watching them cut off the glazed portions? Oh the agony of seeing your beautiful holiday ham desecrated in this manner! And I am one of those horrible people, cutting off the brown sugar toppings so I can enjoy my ham in pure savoury-ness only. I do my best to do it without drawing attention to myself, as I would hate to make my host feel the pain of my ham faux pas.
But I think I may have hit upon a solution that suits us all, both sweet and savoury ham lovers. How about a tangy, spicy Asian-inspired glaze that really shakes up your ham routine? When Jones Dairy Farm asked me to come up with another ham glaze for them, I admit I was a bit stymied. I’d already created a garlic rosemary crusted ham and I really didn’t want to go in the direction of a sweet glaze. I mulled over many options and finally decided on a compromise, something that was sweet but had a kick to it too.
I admit that Asian and baked ham aren’t often uttered together in the same sentence. But you have to ask yourself, why not? Let me put that a little more emphatically…why on earth not? They are really good together! I couldn’t stop tasting this glaze and something about the spicy sweetness paired really well with the smokiness of ham. It made a nice change of pace from the traditional sweet ham glazes. And any leftover sauce is delicious in a stir-fry or on seafood.

What a fun take on an Easter ham! My boyfriend is a huge fan of ham, and prefers it over turkey.

I’m totally with you – some of those sweet ham glazes are just TOO sweet, and the idea of candied ham is just a total turnoff to me. I LOVE this homemade sauce with a bit of spice. The perfect balance of flavors!

I really would like to try this ham recipe. Do you think that this would work out well in the crockpot?
Carolyn says
Probably… just follow regular directions for crockpot ham and add my glaze.
