Some people have bad hair days, I have bad kitchen days. Well, I have bad hair days too, but that concerns me less and less the older I get. My kitchen, on the other hand, is far more important to me and its off days are far harder on my psyche. If you spend any amount of time in your kitchen, you probably understand what I mean. Kitchens tend to become dumping grounds – for unopened mail, kids’ homework, and various other odds and ends that haven’t managed to make it to their rightful place. No matter how big your kitchen is, it can get cluttered very quickly, especially if you have small children. I am certainly guilty of this myself, but show me someone who is a mother and a cook who isn’t!
It may seem somewhat incongruous, then, that I have been asked to cohost an upcoming class entitled “Creating an Efficient Kitchen” on Cooking Connections, the Web’s first ever virtual cooking school. But it’s true, and I am very much looking forward to it and hope you all will join me.
Because despite what you see in these pictures (it was a very bad kitchen-day), I’ve learned a trick or two about running an efficient kitchen. I know where all my favourite ingredients are and I keep my most-used kitchen tools within easy reach. Everything has its place so that I am not left scrambling in the middle of cooking. And because baking is my true love, I have a whole cupboard devoted to baking ingredients, with a shelf for my various flours and another for all of my flavourings and sweeteners. An efficient kitchen isn’t always about how tidy it is, but whether or not it makes sense to you as the primary user.
