My family loves smoothies and could easily drink them on a daily basis. I love them because I can pack them full of nutritious ingredients and no one is any wiser. Toss a few berries in there to add color and flavor, and they gulp them down without question. These Keto Blueberry Smoothies check all the boxes, and then some.

Nutritional powerhouse: This delicious smoothie has 26 grams of protein, 4 grams of dietary fiber, and plenty of vitamins and antioxidants.
Rich and thick: There’s nothing more sad than a thin, watery smoothie! I use frozen blueberries, chia seeds, and some crushed ice for a creamy, rich consistency.
Ready in minutes: Smoothies are perfect for when you’re short on time and in need of something satisfying.
Delicious! That bright purply-blue color and luscious blueberry flavor appeal to kids and adults alike.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Greek yogurt: Choose a yogurt that has a low carb count and a high protein count. I like Too Good or Chobani High Protein.
  • Low carb milk: I favor unflavored hemp milk or almond milk. But you can use low carb dairy milks as well, if you can find them.
  • Frozen blueberries: Using frozen berries will help make the smoothie thicker and colder. You can also use frozen raspberries or strawberries.
  • Protein powder: I prefer whey protein, but egg white or collagen protein will work as well. Plant-based proteins work but they will change the color of the smoothie.
  • Heavy cream: A little cream helps make the smoothies ultra rich and satisfying.
  • Chia seeds: Chia is a wonderful way to thicken the smoothies and add fiber and nutrition. You can leave them out if you need have an intolerance.
  • Sweetener: You can use any sweetener you like best here, but it should be powdered or liquid.

Carolyn’s Tips for Success

Crushed ice adds volume and thickness to keto smoothies. It also keeps them colder for longer. My fridge does not make crushed ice so I break it up in my blender before adding the other ingredients.

Any kind of protein powder will work in this recipe, but I recommend using unflavored versions so that you don’t overpower the delicate blueberry flavor. Flavored protein powders like vanilla are often very sweet and strong.

The chia seeds are optional, but they are great for adding fiber and making the smoothies more filling and satisfying. I have recently been eating more of them and I find that they help keep my blood sugar in target range.

This is my go-to smoothie. During weeks when I’m more sensitive to dairy I modify it somewhat by using egg white powder and using nondairy cream but I keep the yogurt.

  3. Where can I find the Expert Tips for Substitutions? I cannot find on the site.

I have a question – I don’t often have Greek yogurt in the house, and in our store you can only get big expensive containers, then I use a small amount. But I’m having cottage cheese more and more often. Would cottage cheese be a fair substitute? Not only this recipe, but most recipes? Or would sour cream be better? Thanks for your help!

    1. Jenny, use regular, plain, full-fat yogurt or make your own so-called “Greek yogurt”. Line a sieve with a couple of layers of paper towels, dump the yogurt into the lined sieve, then set it over a large bowl to catch the whey that will start draining through almost immediately. Leave it to drip for a couple of hours. Then plop the thickened yogurt into a clean bowl, give it a good stir, and return it to the original container and refrigerate. This is much nicer than commercial Greek yogurt.

  5. For more blueberry flavor, also try Lorann’s oil super strength blueberry flavor; believe me a little goes a long way, it’s super flavorful without an aftertaste. I purchased the super strength pineapple oil to make a Pina colada smoothie without the fruit and it tasted heavenly!!!❤️

Hi Carolyn! Thanks for the fantastic keto blueberry smoothie recipe. It looks absolutely delicious! I was wondering if I could add spinach for an extra boost of nutrients. I saw a similar suggestion in another keto smoothie recipe (https://iketomom.com/keto-smoothie/) and thought it might work well here too. What do you think?

  7. I just noticed this recipe and can’t wait to try it. We live in Maine and one of the Maine wild blueberry growers makes local deliveries. I currently have 2 five-lb boxes of the beautiful berries in the freezer. They’re boxed so well that they last at least a year. I’m so happy when I see recipes from you that can use the frozen fruit.
