I don’t drink cocktails very often, but when I do, I almost always choose a margarita. My go-to is a simple keto margarita on the rocks, but these Blended Keto Strawberry Margaritas are a delightful way to shake it up a bit. Especially as the warm weather approaches.

I have never enjoyed cocktails that are overly sweet, even before I was sugar-free. I just don’t like that cloying mouthfeel. I much prefer beverages that allow the natural tanginess and flavor to shine through. So I kept the sweetener to a minimum in this recipe. I added just enough to bring out the natural sweetness of the berries, and to complement the tanginess of the lime juice.

With Cinco de Mayo around the corner, this recipe is a must-make. It’s perfect with some Chipotle Lime Chicken or some easy keto carnitas.

Avoiding alcohol? You could also make them virgin and enjoy them as a refreshing mocktail.

  • So easy: Crush up your ice, add the other ingredients, and blend. In 5 minutes, you have a wonderful beverage.
  • Classic flavor: All the great berry, lime, and tequila flavor you crave!
  • Low carb: These low carb cocktails have only 6g of carbs per serving.
  • Great for parties: You can easily make this recipe in a big batch for gatherings!

Ingredients you need

  • Strawberries: I’ve recently discovered that using frozen strawberries that have thawed a bit makes a thicker margarita. It also eliminates the need for tons of ice that can water down your drink as it melts.
  • Fresh limes: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor! And I like to garnish this drink with a wedge of lime.
  • Tequila: I prefer white tequila in my margaritas, but golden tequila works as well.
  • Sweetener: You need powdered sweetener for the drink but use a granular sweetener to rim the glasses.

Step by Step Directions

  1. Crush the ice: Place the ice in the blender and process until finely crushed.
  2. Add the other ingredients: strawberries, lime juice, tequila, and powdered sweetener. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust sweetener as desired.
  3. Prep the glasses: Run a lime wedge around the rim of two cocktail or margarita glass. Place granulated Swerve in a shallow dish and run the rim of the glass through the sweetener.
  4. Serve: Divide margaritas between prepared glasses. Garnish with lime wedges and strawberries.

Tips for Success

You will notice that I call for “frozen strawberries, slightly thawed”. This helps the margaritas blend up better into a thick, slushy style beverage. If you use them straight out of the freezer, it can be hard on the blender. So let them sit out for 15 to 20 minutes in a bowl, so they are a bit soft but not completely thawed.

If you want to use fresh berries, try placing them in the freezer for 40 to 60 minutes, until they’ve begun to freeze but aren’t rock solid.

My new fridge doesn’t produce crushed ice so I crush it first in the blender before I add any other ingredients. This also helps the margaritas blend up better.

Sweetener Options

The consistency of these keto strawberry margaritas does not rely on the kind of sweetener you use so feel free to use your favorite. I recommend a granular sweetener for the rim of the glasses for a more classic look.

For the beverages themselves, you can use anything you like, including high intensity sweeteners like stevia. I am not sure how much you want to use so just add a little and adjust to taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drink tequila on the keto diet?

Pure spirits like tequila, rum, vodka, and whiskey have no carbs whatsoever and can be used in keto cocktails. Keep in mind, however, that over-consuming alcohol can reduce ketosis for many people. Not to mention that fact the over-consumption is not a healthy habit for anyone. But you can enjoy the occasional low carb cocktail if you choose the right spirits and mixers.

Can you make keto strawberry margaritas in advance?

Blended margaritas like these are best served fresh, as they melt and become watery quickly. I don’t recommend making them more than 30 minutes in advance of serving. Keep the blended margaritas in the fridge until ready to serve.

How many carbs are in a Keto Strawberry Margarita?

This keto strawberry margarita recipe has 6.7g of carbs and 1.2g of fiber per serving. That comes to 5.5g net carbs per serving.

I like the look of that sweetener. Do you have other recipes in which you use it? How would it behave in baked goods?

  4. can these be made without alcohol?

I have seen recipes that either said to just omit the tequila completely or to substitute Agave in the Raw for tequila to still get a “tequila” taste to the margarita 🤷‍♀️. I’m personally considering omitting tequila completely to keep it keto.

  5. I just made this for our daughters 23rd birthday and it was a hit! Soo yummy!!!

  6. Works great if you freeze strawberries. You can keep a bag of them in freezer . You don’t have to worry about them going bad before you use them and you can always have them on hand. You cab use less ice also, flavor isn’t diluted.

I just tweaked your recipe a little. I added 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of granular swerve and about 1/2 tablespoon of stevia glycerite. It turned really frothy and foamy! It was spectacular! I plan on making this without tequila for my son on Memorial Day.

  12. Denise S. says:

This is the BEST low carb cocktail ever! I used a lot of ice, a lot of fresh squeezed lime juice, lots of strawberries and about 3 oz of good tequila. I drank two batches of this. I love it…. It’s dessert in a glass!!! <3
