Mocha Almonds

Salty-sweet toasted almonds with a dusting of cocoa powder and espresso. A healthy and delicious low carb snack.

Low Carb Mocha AlmondsI love being a part of the larger food blogger community; I am continually amazed at the helpful, sharing attitude of the vast majority of my fellow bloggers. I even belong to a group called “Food Bloggers Helping Each Other” and that name alone speaks volumes.  Whether it’s sharing information, ideas or just helping another blogger out in a pinch, there is never a lack of support in this wonderful group of people. As in any profession, there are a few people out there that are highly competitive and perhaps even a little cutthroat. But the vast majority of us subscribe to the philosophy that helping each other means we all do better. The rising tide lifts all the boats in the harbour, as the wise Dean of a college I once worked at used to say. Nowhere do I find this to be more true than in food bloggerdom.

So with that, I tell you that I created this recipe for a guest post on Ravie Nom Noms. Raven is a blogger I feel like I’ve known forever. I don’t know exactly when we became aware of each other, but for years now we’ve been commenting on and sharing each other’s posts. And as she is getting married in October and is up to her eyeballs in wedding planning, she put out the APB for guest posts. It was the least I could do to help a fellow blogger keep her blog rolling along while she attends to her real life.

Sugar Free Mocha Dusted Almonds

The impetus behind these low carb Mocha Almonds was the snack aisle at my local grocery store, where I’ve often stood looking longingly at the commercial variety. Toasted almonds dusted in cocoa powder and coffee, what’s not to love? Well, the sugar for one thing. And the other funny food additives that manage to find their way into store bought nuts. It’s just too easy to make your own far healthier version at home. Okay, so mine might not look as perfect or as pretty. They end up less “cocoa-dusted” and more “cocoa-clumped” when you toss the cocoa/espresso mixture with the warm, freshly toasted almonds. But they are delicious and they really satisfy that craving for a salty sweet snack.

So head on over to Ravie Nom Noms for my healthy Mocha Almonds recipe!

Don’t get me wrong, I am sure they are delicious. But a serving of Emerald brand cocoa roast almonds only has 2g of net carbs.

Actually, they contain 4 g of net carbs (7 g of total carbs minus 3 g of fiber). They also contain sugar and other additives and it’s far more cost effective (and ridiculously easy) to make your own. Don’t fool yourself, it’s still far healthier to make your own.

And after almonds the main ingredient on the Emerald label is the ubiquitous “Natural & Artificial Flavors”!

My single serve pack disagrees with you. Must be a different serving size. In any case, I’m sure your version is healthier than the store bought. That is what you do, after all. I just have a different definition of ridiculously easy, but if I could get my boyfriend to make these while I’m at work, they would fit the definition, lol. Definitely bookmarking the recipe for later.

LOL, poor boyfriend. It must be the single serve packs, because when you look at the large bag on their website, it says 7 g of carbs total and 3 g of fiber.

Yeah, I get the 100 calorie packs. I’m sure like all other 100 calorie packs, they are just giving me a smaller serving to make the product seem healthier.

Sorry for the late posting today. I’m up at a cottage in Canada with spotty internet so it didn’t publish when it was supposed to!

My 13 year with Type 1 is a huge fan of your Yogurt Almond Flour Pancakes. This week, we also tried the Rosemary Garlic nuts and the Thai Cucumber salad. When I told her they were all your recipes, she said she loved you! As a teenage girl, she is a big Starbucks fan but obviously can’t enjoy much there. I can hardly wait for her to try these!

Living on a farm where a grocery store trip is 75-80 miles one way, I really appreciate recipes that let me use what I have on hand. With my husband being diabetic, he eats a lot of nuts as snacks and these just might satisfy his sweet tooth as well!!! Thank you!!

These are delicious and I love making them. I also just made a batch of these as well as one substituting a chili spice concoction for the cocoa and it’s good that way to do it for a savoury take. 🙂

The whole lot (almost two lbs!) is gonna be gone in an hour. My husband and I can’t stop eating them!
