Have a Low Carb, Gluten-Free Super Bowl

A delicious collection of low carb, gluten-free appetizer and snack recipes, perfect for watching the big game.

Low Carb Super Bowl Recipes

My maternal grandfather played football for the Toronto Argonauts back in the late 1940’s.  I never met the man, as he died before I was born, but to all accounts, he was quite the character.  He broke his nose so many times, they removed some of the cartilage and he could push the fleshy portion back into his face.  Gross?  Yes.  Entertaining?  Questionable, especially to a small, impressionable child.  But I do get the sense that he and I might have got along like a house afire.  My fair, blond appearance came from him, and I suspect some of my feistiness may have as well.  And thus ends my relationship with football.  I have no affinity for any of the Canadian teams beyond this tenuous connection, and I don’t believe I have ever watched the Grey Cup.

I do watch the Super Bowl every year, but I couldn’t care a fig about who wins and who loses.  I just care about the food, the drink and the friends.  For  me, any Super Bowl event must include copious amounts of wings, beer and other finger foods, dips and appetizers.  I want to eat myself silly, chat with my friends, and occasionally look over at the screen to see what the score is.  I may or may not pay attention to the half-time show (last year, we got all the adults and kids dancing to Madonna).  I try to watch at least a few of the commercials, to catch the funny ones.  And then I eat some more and go to bed with a tummy ache.

This year, my Super Bowl preparation includes gathering up many delicious, low carb, gluten-free recipes from friends and fellow bloggers.  And a few ideas for quick store-bought items if you don’t have time to make your own.  Check them out!

Whip up a quick dip made with Stonyfield 1.5% Organic Greek Yogurt (I am trying to convince them that they need to make a full fat greek yogurt!) and Gourmet Garden Herbs.  I love tossing some of garlic, cilantro and red chili pepper into yogurt to make a southwestern style dip.

Stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are now starting to sell kale chips.  Sure, they are easy enough to make at home, but sometimes you just want to open a bag…

Many stores like Target now sell Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks and my kids love these things.  Just be sure to get the ones with no added sugars.

Omg this is soooo on time, I’m not from America, but I’m a huge fan of your and of American football. Since its here at night me and my bf have friend coming over and everyone took off from their work and I have to provide low carb snacks since I’m on Atkins and I’ve been looking for low carb snacks that resemble superbowl snacks for weeks now! THANK YOU!

You sound just like me. My husband was an ardent football fan but I only watched one game a year. the superbowl. It was the food that made the day and I put out quite a spread that we just picked the whole time. Even my mother used to invite herself and she had no interest in football. She enjoyed all the food. I miss them both but I believe they have the best seats in the house now. Thanks for sharing your recipes and memories with us.

What a deliciously healthy Super Bowl round up! I don’t know why I always think that Super Bowl has to be loaded with grease and cheese and wheat. This just goes to show that even when we indulge we can still be healthy. Thanks for sharing all the great links!
