Naomi says: “I just made this and it’s amazing. It’s better than any store bought and about 1/3 the cost of all the “sugar free” brands on the store shelf!! Thank you thank you thank you Carolyn!!! Another winner!“

So easy! I kid you not, this is the easiest recipe in the world. In fact I refer to it as “Cheater’s Keto Ketchup” in one of my cookbooks.
No cook recipe: Simply whisk the ingredients together until smooth.
Simple ingredients: You can find all the ingredients you need at your local grocery store. You don’t need any special or artificial ingredients.
Customizable: You can easily adjust the sweetness and the seasonings to suit your tastes.
Cost effective: This homemade keto ketchup costs only a few dollars to make so it saves you money too!

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Tomato paste: A base of thick tomato paste means you don’t need to cook this ketchup at all. Stir in a little vinegar and water, and you instantly have the right consistency.
  • Apple cider vinegar: A little apple cider vinegar gives the ketchup a little more tanginess.
  • Balsamic vinegar: Balsamic imparts a touch of umami and deepens the flavor.
  • Sweetener: I like to use my own brown sugar substitute in this recipe but you can use almost any sweetener.
  • Allspice: Part of the unique flavor profile of ketchup comes from spices like allspice or cloves.
  • Chipotle powder: I like giving it a kick of heat with a touch of chipotle powder, but this is entirely optional.
  • Pantry staples: Salt, garlic powder.

Carolyn’s Tips for Success

Different brands of tomato paste vary a little in how thick they are. How much water you add will depend on the paste you use. Whisk in the first two tablespoons, and then add it just a little at a time until you get the right consistency.

I like keeping my sugar free ketchup in a squeeze bottle so it’s easy to drizzle over burgers and dogs any time we want!

Sweetener options: You can use any sweetener you like in this recipe, as long as it dissolves well. I find that even granular sweeteners end up dissolving nicely with a little whisking.

You can also use pure stevia or monk fruit extracts, but you will only need a really tiny amount. Add a few drops at a time and taste before adding more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most ketchup is made with sugar or high fructose corn syrup and should be avoided on the keto diet. It typically has 5g of carbs per tablespoon. You can purchase no-sugar-added ketchup, but it often contains artificial ingredients and/or is quite expensive. However, it’s easy to make your own keto ketchup with a few pantry staples!

Ketchup that is made without any added sugars can be just as good or better than the sugary kind. Some are entirely unsweetened, which can be tasty. This keto ketchup recipe uses a brown sugar replacement and spices to give it a more authentic flavor.

I recommend storing this keto ketchup in a covered container in the fridge for up to 10 days.

Absolutely delicious. Why would anyone use store bought ketchup when this is so simple and delicious.

Really good! I did not add sugar and used tomato sauce instead of water. This made it smoother. Tomatoes are sweet. Sugar is not needed.

So flavorful!! Even the non-Keto people in my family love this ketchup! Thanks Carolyn!

  8. Wow. Your replies to people’s questions are kind of rude. Sure, the information is included, but would it have really taken any more time to type out the answers than it did to be rude about it?

    1. There is zero rudeness in my responses. They are direct and to the point. But yes… it would have taken more time, especially when I have to answer the same question over and over. This way, others see that they too can go and find the info for themselves in my post or recipe card. It’s called a “teachable moment”.

One has to wonder, though, about commenters who critique my approach but hide behind a fake name and fake email address. 😉

I don’t agree with you. I read comments for recipes that I will save and it’s so time consuming to read all the comments that are either repetitive because people have not read the comments or the information is in the recipe. I wish those comments could simply be deleted rather than even replied to. I don’t feel she is being rude at all.

And how long does this keep for – do you need to store in the fridge etc?

Do you need to put the sugar in??

    1. It’s not sugar. But if you don’t want it sweetened, you can leave out any sweetener.
