Holidays can be the hardest for people on a keto diet, but it really doesn’t have to be that way. I’m of the mind that almost any favorite holiday food can be made keto friendly. It just takes a little ingenuity.
And with summer holidays like 4th of July, I think it’s even easier. The focus is often on grilled foods and fresh sides, with maybe a little red, white, and blue thrown in for good measure. And as long as you stick to keto red white and blue options, like berries and cream, you’re fine.
How to enjoy a healthy Fourth of July
The thing about a keto diet is that it takes a bit of practice. You learn to change your mindset and no longer view family get togethers and holiday celebrations as minefields of carbs and sugar. Instead, you begin to see opportunity. Opportunity to enjoy fresh healthy foods in new ways, and maybe change people’s minds about what keto really is. And isn’t.
So what can you eat? Load up on the burgers and the dogs (the healthy ones!), of course. Maybe some ribs, maybe grilled chicken, maybe even some shrimp skewers. Or salmon, for the Omega 3s. All healthy and satisfying.
But don’t forget the appetizers and sides. People love to stand around and pick at finger foods before the main course. Think guacamole, slices of cucumber topped with herbed cream cheese, fresh dips and veggies for dipping.
For the sides, salads that focus on fresh summer produce are your best bet. Caprese, cauliflower salad, broccoli salad, cucumber salad, and coleslaw are all great low carb options. You really can’t go wrong and it’s a great way to get in your veggies for the day.
And then have some fun with dessert, showing the world how great sugar-free can taste. Think light and creamy with lots of fresh berries. And keto sheet cakes that feed a hungry crowd. Of course, you may need some popsicles on hand to cool everyone off.
Need some beverages to wash it all down? Virgin or alcoholic, there are plenty of choices. Steer clear of the carb-heavy beers and stick with dry wines and sugar-free drinks. But don’t imbibe too much. Be safe and be smart!
Keto Appetizers
Sausage Cheese Dip
Creamy, cheesy, and a little bit spicy! If only my words were adequate enough to tell you just how good this is. And how, every time I bring it to a get together, people cluster around it, dipping and devouring. It’s the life of any party, keto or not!
Keto Cheese Crackers
What I can tell you is that these crispy, salty crackers are seriously hard to resist. They have everything you want in a savory keto snack, satisfying that primal urge for crunch. But with only 2g net carbs per serving.
Cucumber Bites
You can prep these easy cucumber appetizers ahead but don’t put them all together until you are almost ready to serve. Cucumbers are watery and the minute you put on that salty everything bagel seasoning, they are going to start releasing water.

My family is absolutely bonkers for this keto pulled pork. It’s so mouthwateringly tender, with a sweet and spicy kick. And since it’s cooked in an Instant Pot, it takes only about half the time to make.
Keto Side Dishes
Cauliflower Potato Salad
I brought this to a get together recently and it was a massive hit. People couldn’t believe how much it tasted like the real thing! I think I gave out the recipe to at least a dozen people.
7 Layer Salad
I am completely new to the concept of Seven Layer Salad, but I have to admit, I love it! It’s a fun and easy way to serve salad for a party. And one of the best parts is that you can make it ahead by up to a full day. So there’s no last minute scramble to prep food before your guests arrive.
Grilled Zucchini
We make this grilled zucchini at lease once a week in the summer. Whenever we have the grill going for meat or fish, we toss some sliced zucchini on first. It becomes so perfectly tender, without being mushy. And that slightly charred flavor is utterly delectable.
Keto Sesame Noodles
It’s such a fast and simple dish, but the flavor is outstanding. And because they can be served hot or cold, they are wonderful any time of year. They will take your keto meals from good to fabulous.
Cilantro Lime Cauliflower Rice
This easy Cilantro Lime Cauliflower Rice might just be the perfect keto side dish. It’s light and fresh, has only 5 ingredients, and takes 10 minutes to make. I developed this recipe years ago after a trip to Chipotle and it was an instant family favorite.

Low Carb Cookie Pizza
This cookie pizza recipe has been on my blog for almost 6 years. It’s a perennial favorite, especially around the Fourth of July, since it’s got a little Red White and Blue going on. And it really appeals to kids. Who wouldn’t love a giant low carb cookie that looks like a pizza?

Keto Texas Sheet Cake
Texas sheet cake seems to speak to something deep within the collective American psyche. It’s a well loved American classic and I simply can’t argue with that. So you know I had to create a keto version that lives up to the original!
Sugar Free Fudge Pops
Along with other frozen treats like Keto Frappuccinos and keto ice cream, these chocolate fudge pops are a constant in our house from June to October. If you look back on fond memories of eating Fudgsicles as a kid, you have to try this healthier low carb version. I swear they’re better than the real thing.
Keto Fourth of July Beverages
Keto Margaritas
I have very strong opinions about many things, but perhaps none are as strong as to what makes a really good, classic margarita. And I do believe I have perfected the keto margarita!
Blueberry Skinny Mojitos
There simply isn’t anything more refreshing on a hot summer evening than a Blueberry Keto Mojito. Like many cocktails, classic mojitos are made with simple syrup so they aren’t exactly keto friendly. But it’s easy to replace the sugar with your favorite sweetener.
Sugar-Free Brazilian Lemonade
This frosty beverage is quickly becoming one of my favorite keto treats. It’s incredibly refreshing, with a flavor that’s both rich and light at the same time.
Keto Sweet Peach Tea
For this keto sweet tea recipe, you create a syrup by boiling and steeping a small amount of peaches to release their flavor. You also discard the majority of the peach pulp, which lowers the carb count further.
Raspberry Limeade
This raspberry limeade recipe is an older one that I decided to revisit and update. We have a huge raspberry patch in our backyard and it can produce quite a lot of berries. What better way to use them up than making a thirst-quenching drink?
What about Canada Day?
Don’t worry, my fellow Canadians! I would never leave you out of the fun. Of course you can use all of these recipes on July 1st as well. But here are a few more that celebrate our unique heritage.

Naniamo bars were my favorite (favourite!) dessert growing up so you know I had to come up with a delicious keto recipe!
Keto Butter Tarts
I actually first posted this recipe for keto butter tarts back in 2014, so it was time for an update. There have been so many developments in keto products and sweeteners in the intervening 7 years, I knew I could make them even more gooey and luscious than ever.
